What It CBD Oil?

If you’ve landed on this website through a Google search or link then you may already know about CBD oil. It is one of the molecules extracted from the cannabis plant and infused with oil. Its reputation has been built around claims it can help with a host of ailments in the body, mind and soul.

Although CBD is relatively new, widespread information about this plant medicine –and its ability to aid in pain management for medical issues like tendonitis–is still only entering the mainstream now.

A growing amount of scientific research is indicating that CBD is the next-gen medical breakthrough we’ve all been waiting for. Animal studies have already proven that CBD has the ability to:

  • relieve pain both temporary and chronic
  • regulate emotional imbalance
  • heal gastrointestinal issues and even;
  • speed up the recovery of fractured bones

I was initially drawn to try CBD oil because I’m highly allergic to chemical pain-relievers, like ibuprofen. One of my close friends is a cancer patient, and she told me how she uses CBD for effective pain and nausea relief from her Chemo sessions. I decided to give it a try and was so impressed that I never looked back.

In fact, I am so passionate about CBD now that it has become my mission to spread the word so that this natural medicine can help others too. But today I’m specifically going to look at how CBD oil provides effective pain relief and additionally speeds up the healing of tendons from tendonitis.

CBD Oil and Tendonitis

Before looking at how to use CBD oil for tendonitis and whether it’s a worthwhile treatment, it’s helpful to know exactly what tendonitis is and what causes it.

Tendonitis CBD Oil

Runners often have trouble with tendonitis

A tendon is a tough strip of fibrous, stretchy tissue that connects a muscle to a bone and is able to withstand tension. Almost every movement in the human body, including blinking your eyelids, can be credited to the existence of tendons. Tendonitis, also known as tendinitis, describes the condition where a tendon has become painfully inflamed

There are well over a thousand tendons in the human body, but tendonitis more commonly affects larger tendons that are prone to overuse. In most cases it develops over a period of time due to a repeated motion that puts stress on the tendon.

Overuse of any muscles can lead to tendonitis, so the condition has a strong link to physical activities like exercise, as well as physically strenuous jobs such as mining. Tendonitis is more likely to occur with the onset of age, and is also commonly linked to pre-existing health conditions like diabetes and arthritis. If left untreated, tendonitis may result in a rupture or tear that requires surgery.

Does CBD Oil Help With Tendonitis Pain?

At this point it’s becoming clearer that CBD works as a painkiller for tendonitis. The only mystery scientists are trying to explain is how?

Although the quantitative data is still in the early stages of research, experts have hypothesized several theories from animal studies as to how CBD could be providing pain relief. One theory revolves around the fact that CBD has been found to prevent the body from using anandamide (the pain regulation compound) which means that there is more anandamide in the bloodstream to support pain relief.

Another hypothesis is that CBD reduces inflammation in the nervous system, which is believed to have a positive impact on pain relief. Reducing inflammation could have the desired side effect of alleviating the symptoms of tendonitis.

Although the quantitative data is still mounting, there’s plenty of evidence online today in the form of qualitative statistics that confirm millions of others have found effective tendonitis pain relief from CBD oil.

Personally, I can vouch for the fact that CBD got me through my “jumper’s knee” (also known as patellar tendonitis) and allowed me to remain functional by providing major pain relief. As an added bonus, I noticed that my mood felt calmer and generally more uplifted as well! CBD literally kept me together so that I could handle my relationships and career whilst walking around on crutches.

Can CBD Oil Heal Tendons?

While CBD won’t tendon repair instantly (nothing will!) it will provide effective pain relief, reduce inflammation and significantly speed up the healing process. While scientific research on humans and CBD is still in its infancy, studies on rodents have shown the miraculous benefits of CBD in healing tendons and even bones.

Researchers have noted that CBD promotes the maturation of collagen (which is exactly what tendons are made of). Professor Itai Bab of Hebrew University co-authored a study on CBD with Dr Yankel Gabet of Tel Aviv University, and found that the human skeleton is actually regulated by CBD compounds. In a powerful statement, Gabet commented “The clinical potential of cannabinoid-related compounds is simply undeniable at this point.” So while the answer is not yet a clear cut yes, preliminary scientific studies are certainly hypothesizing that it does.

Traditional and CBD Related Treatments

Unlike a bacterial infection, there is no pill to cure tendonitis. But what is the best treatment for tendonitis? It involves time and tender loving care. The most popular home remedy and indeed a recommended treatment is:

  1. Immediately rest the painful tendon and avoid any further physical activity that induces pain.
  2. Apply ice (or a trusty old frozen steak) to the tendon for around 10 minutes every 30 minutes. Do this for at least a couple of days or as long as you’re getting a benefit.
  3. Gently perform a range of motion exercises to keep the joint from going stiff. Increase as your comfort level allows.

In more severe tendonitis patients may be advised to receive a corticosteroid shot to alleviate the painful symptoms, however repeated use of this chemical-based injection is thought to weaken the tendon and increase the risk of a rupture. With the progression of modern medicine we now have more options available, such as CBD oil and CBD ointment as well.

Types of Tendonitis CBD Oil Can Treat

As I mentioned earlier in this post, tendonitis can affect any tendon in the body that sees repeated use. The next logical question some people have after learning that is what type of tendonitis CBD oil can be used for. Well, due to its anti inflammation properties, CBD may help with the following forms of tendonitis…

CBD Oil For Elbow Tendonitis

Commonly referred to as tennis elbow for it’s tendency to inflict itself on racquet sports players. Tennis elbow is a severe inflammation of the joint and severe pain on the outer side of the elbow. CBD oil aid in reducing inflammation could help with this.

CBD Oil For Achilles Tendonitis

More commonly used as a turn of phrase to point out one’s weak points, the achilles tendon is prone to overuse in runners and other sports that put a lot of strain on the ankles and calves. Users all over reddit swear by CBD oil as a remedy for this extremely common condition.

CBD Oil For Patella Tendonitis

I have a lot of experience in the patella, having had two knee reconstruction surgeries. This one is commonly referred to as “jumper’s knee” for its penchant to cause pain on jumping athletes like basketball players and volleyballers. Plenty of NBA players are noted cannabis enthusiasts for this reason.

CBD Oil For Shoulder Tendonitis

Shoulders are one of those joints we take for granted, until they get injured. That’s when you start to notice how many movements depend on them. A good dose of rest and ice can help decrease recovery time but a few drops of CBD oil everyday doesn’t go astray either.

Topical Oils and CBD Ointment for Tendonitis
CBD Cream for Tendonitis

CBD cream being for tendonitis

Essential oils are extremely popular and come in many different types and scents. In fact, you may even ask what essential oils are good for tendonitis? Well, lavender oil, eucalyptus oil, chamomile oil and rosemary oil have all shown signs of easing pain. But, I still think you can’t go passed CBD oil or even CBD cream.

In addition to the potent healing properties of CBD there is also topical CBD available to provide pain relief, and speed up recovery. In light of the fact that tendonitis can benefit from massage, it seems only fitting that topical CBD would be the way to go for this ailment.

I personally wish CBD ointment had been on the market when I had my jumper’s knee, as it is clear that it would have sped up the healing of my tendon even more. Having experienced the benefits of the oil alone, and since researched CBD in depth, I can without a doubt recommend that a combination of CBD oil and CBD creams would be your best bet.
